Ohio biennium budget and your Library

How will the House's version of the budget impact Ohio?

  • The Ohio House of Representatives' biennium budget proposal eliminates the Public Library Fund, a mechanism that has funded 251 public library systems for four decades.
  • Ohio House members plan to replace the Public Library Fund with a lump dollar amount for all Ohio libraries, which will result in cuts to libraries across the state.
  • The Public Library Fund has remained flat for 25 years and House members have put forward a dollar amount that does not account for a quarter of a century of inflation.

Worthington Libraries receives 22% of its annual revenue from the Public Library Fund.

What have we done so far:

  • Library supporters throughout Ohio sent thousands of email messages to House members.
  • We have had conversations with legislators, met with them in person and continue to work with the Ohio Library Council to maintain a funding system that has provided stable and equitable funding for all Ohio's libraries.

What's next:

  • The House will advance their budget to the Senate.
  • We will keep you up-to-date on what happens to library funding in the House.
  • The final bill will go to the Governor for signing by June 30.
  • We may ask for your support along any step of this budget process!

We've been so grateful for your support. Please come visit us and make the library the best part of your routine!
