Purpose
Under direction, the Outreach Librarian prepares and conducts programs in the community and actively promotes library services, materials and programs.
Essential Position functions
- Proactively provides customer service
- Collaborates as a member of the community relations department to communicate the library’s value to the community
- Plans, promotes and presents programs for patrons outside the Library through community outreach with the guidance of the Outreach Services Coordinator
- Recommends materials based on patrons’ interests
- Assists patrons with basic troubleshooting of common software products, operating systems, browsers and other technologies associated with library services (including handheld devices, e-readers, laptops, tablets, etc.)
- Represents the Library at community events
- Performs duties of Volunteer Coordinator, as needed
- Serves as librarian-in-charge, as needed
Required experience
Education, Training and/or Experience
- Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited school
- A minimum of one (1) year of customer service experience
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics
- Proficient in the use of the Integrated Library System (ILS)
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate judgment in handling information and records
- Ability to work accurately with attention to detail
- Ability to arrange items in alphanumeric and/or subject order
- Ability to use correct grammar, puncture, spelling and publication style
- Ability to develop and maintain relationships with community partners
- Ability speak before groups
- Ability to develop and present age-appropriate programs and activities
- Ability to safely drive outreach vehicle in a variety of weather conditions
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations
Valid driver license, with an acceptable driving record
Physical Demands
- Ability to sit and use computer for extended periods and operate standard office equipment, daily
- Ability to move up to fifty (50) pounds, daily
- Ability to push book trucks with up to 150 pounds of materials on them, daily
- Ability to stand for extended periods, frequently
- Ability to perform repeated reaching, bending, climbing and squatting, daily
- Travel by automobile is required frequently
Working Conditions
- Majority of work performed offsite in various community locations and/or in general office environment of the Library
- Requires availability for extended hours as needed
- Requires evenings and/or weekends
- Requires periodic participation and attendance at events and training
Schedule
- Monday-Thursday: 9:00 am - 5:30 pm
- Friday: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
- Evenings and weekends as needed
