Purpose

Under direction, the Outreach Librarian prepares and conducts programs in the community and actively promotes library services, materials and programs. 

Essential Position functions

  1. Proactively provides customer service
  2. Collaborates as a member of the community relations department to communicate the library’s value to the community
  3. Plans, promotes and presents programs for patrons outside the Library through community outreach with the guidance of the Outreach Services Coordinator
  4. Recommends materials based on patrons’ interests
  5. Assists patrons with basic troubleshooting of common software products, operating systems, browsers and other technologies associated with library services (including handheld devices, e-readers, laptops, tablets, etc.)
  6. Represents the Library at community events
  7. Performs duties of Volunteer Coordinator, as needed
  8. Serves as librarian-in-charge, as needed

 

Required experience

Education, Training and/or Experience
  1. Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited school
  2. A minimum of one (1) year of customer service experience
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics
  1. Proficient in the use of the Integrated Library System (ILS)
  2. Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate judgment in handling information and records
  3. Ability to work accurately with attention to detail
  4. Ability to arrange items in alphanumeric and/or subject order
  5. Ability to use correct grammar, puncture, spelling and publication style
  6. Ability to develop and maintain relationships with community partners
  7. Ability speak before groups
  8. Ability to develop and present age-appropriate programs and activities
  9. Ability to safely drive outreach vehicle in a variety of weather conditions
  10. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
  11. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint

Valid driver license, with an acceptable driving record

Physical Demands
  1. Ability to sit and use computer for extended periods and operate standard office equipment, daily
  2. Ability to move up to fifty (50) pounds, daily
  3. Ability to push book trucks with up to 150 pounds of materials on them, daily
  4. Ability to stand for extended periods, frequently
  5. Ability to perform repeated reaching, bending, climbing and squatting, daily
  6. Travel by automobile is required frequently
Working Conditions
  1. Majority of work performed offsite in various community locations and/or in general office environment of the Library
  2. Requires availability for extended hours as needed
  3. Requires evenings and/or weekends
  4. Requires periodic participation and attendance at events and training

Schedule

  • Monday-Thursday: 9:00 am - 5:30 pm
  • Friday: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
  • Evenings and weekends as needed
